Pacesetter Vol XLI No. 1 Broadsheet Issue
By Joseph Sonajo
Mercilessly batted off the fields during the 7th Summer Grand Slam National Open at the Clark Freeport Zone in Angeles City, Pampanga last May 1, the Gold Gears Lady Batters expressed their woes on their inferior bats, lack of training grounds, and insufficient trainings.
“Mayroon kasing mga bat na isang palo lang, lipad agad ‘yong bola. ‘Yong mga bat kasi nila [Nat’l Open contenders], puro power bats, e ‘yong sa amin, parang pumalo ka lang ng lata,” said third base pitcher/catcher Judith Ann Sanggalang.
Although original, ordinary bats strike hard but the ball has to be knocked at the center to follow through, unlike power bats that can make a solid smash even without a middle hit. Power bats can be pricey, though, costing around 25,000php apiece according to Joel Garfin, the lady pitchers’ trainer.
"Hindi naman power bats ang problema kung bakit sila talo. If that's how they [players] perceive it in their perspective, ako hindi. It's a matter of training e. Power bat naman kasi, isang quality lang 'yan. If you don't know how to hit the ball technically correct, wala rin," stated Bulacan State University (BulSU) Sports Directress Raquel Mendoza.
Lack of practice grounds and insufficient preparation are also considered as factors why they were not able to clear the throws given to them by their opponents.
“Kulang talaga [sa practice] kasi ‘yong iba naming players, nagbakasyon kaya hindi kami makumpleto kapag training,” she lamented.
Moreover, they train at Bulacan Sports Complex only during Saturdays due to its unavailability on weekdays, and spend two days of their supposedly three-day practice at BulSU’s Rizal Park just to keep them going.
The Gold Gears settled being third out of six teams in their bracket after being blanked by the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses, 3-0. UST placed first in Bracket B, followed by the University of Mindanao.
It was BulSU's second attempt for a win in the National Open. Headed by Coach Rommel Sta. Ana, the team is composed of Sanggalang, Lanie Atido, Cristine Cardinoza, Roma Marie Dela Cruz, Normina Domingo, Anjanette Galvez, Lennie Rose Guillermo, Rose Anne Salvidar, Giselle Sambo, Gemmalyn Santiago, Michelle Tanwangco, and Eunice Rodriguez.
