The ball was round last April 25 for the Gold Gears in the United Central Luzon Athletic Association (UCLAA) pre-tournament sponsored by St. Clair Paint, as its lady cagers and men spikers ruled over their opponents while the men’s basketball team nailed silver, Bulacan State University (BulSU) Activity Center.
The Lady Maroons of Tarlac State University (TSU) did not even taste for once a one-point lead against the senior and rookie line up of the Lady Gold gears, in the end submitting to the latter and only opponent, 70-40.
“Boring. Hindi nila kami nalamangan. Bawat quarter lamang tayo. Medyo nakulangan pa nga kami,” said BulSU Basketball Women team captain Karla Cadag.
In the last Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA), BulSU Lady Cagers also stole the championship from then defending champion TSU, increasing the rivalry between the TSU Maroons and BulSU Gold Gears lady cagers.
Meanwhile, the Gold Gears’ men’s volleyball team trounced TSU, 3-1, even if most of its senior players have already graduated.
“Mahirap ‘yong naging laban kasi mga bago ‘yong player natin. Anim ‘yong gumraduate tapos apat pa do’n ‘yong nasa first six kaya nahirapan kami,” said BulSU volleyball men trainer Edilberto Evangelista.
On the other hand, out of three competing teams, BulSU’s basketball men team landed as runner-up to first placer Lyceum of Subic Bay and was followed by St. Nicholas College of Business and Technology on the third spot in this company tourney.
The Gold Gear ballers ruled the first three quarters of the play, but the last quarter did not end as triumphant for them as LSB Pirates defeated them with an upsetting three-point lead.
With BulSU having a silver finish, the Lyceum Pirates will be sent to the national play-offs of the tournament, which will also be sponsored by St. Clair Paint.
“Maganda ‘yong laban, halos dikitan lang. No’ng fourth [quarter] lang kumbaga nagkaproblema. ‘Pag ‘di talaga para sa ‘yo e gano’n talaga,” said basketball men coach Geronimo Clemente.
Currently, the men’s basketball team is in rigid practice for the UCLAA’s official tournament set this October.
