Deeper than the Marianas
Pacesetter Vol XLI No 1 Broadsheet Issue If only life now could be like that of a kid’s, where you just pick yourself up whenever you fall on the ground. Unfortunately for us grownups, it couldn’t. We just couldn’t stumble so easily. Because it is too far and hard to fall now. Or something like that. And once again not my original. Anyway, the idea of the, uhm, quote (?) came from a conversation in the movie The Duchess, a film chronicling the life of Georgiana Spencer Cavendish, the fifth Duchess of Devonshire. And if the name Spencer rings a bell, yes, she is related to the late Princess Diana of Wales. The birth of the latest royal baby made me remember them. Going back, beautiful, rich, a key figure in politics, Georgiana is one of the most celebrated and controversial women of her time. And I’m not making a movie review so hold on. However, she found herself caught in a distressful situation when her husband made her closest friend his mistress. Georgiana also had a lover and even had a child with the man, but had to leave him and the baby for her children with the Duke. And as for their righteous society’s judgment, I’ll leave it all up to your imagination. Done imagining? In every choice you will make it is inevitable that people would talk. And even if they don’t, you will have to drill it into your head that they have brains so naturally they would be thinking. Gano’n talaga. Some time last school year when I was still the Features Editor of Pacesetter, we have encountered this interviewee who is really hard to deal with. It is of course our role to be patient and calm and understanding and professional and all that because technically, we are strangers asking permission to stick our nose into people’s lives. However, this particular interviewee is pretty hard to spell out, tipong relate na relate na lang kami no’ng staff sa kantang Hot ‘N Cold ni Katy Perry. In the end, we decided to give up on that person. And not without frustration from my part. I was like, after having us go here and there with you not showing up… just ugh. |
But then, one
of my co-editors (I can’t remember who, but whoever you are, I salute you) with
whom I have shared my frustrations told me that I should just try and
understand, because with that person’s situation, it is already a given that it
would be hard for him/her to open up. And it is also possible that the
emotional burden from the circumstance is affecting the person’s judgment, thus
the weird and annoying behavior.
Oo nga naman. But as for my part, I will not claim that I already understand. Because nobody will ever do unless placed in that situation. Sure, it is easy to picture one’s self in the scenario but not even the person with the widest imagination could ever feel the pain, the hardships, the sadness, or the happiness of that person simply because one doesn’t feel with the brain. Indeed, there is no justification for taking in lovers like the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire did. Mary Tudor’s religious inclination isn’t enough reason for her to wipe out those with other religious preferences. So what if the real life owner of Hogwarts could be dating Kate Middleton’s sister, is it enough reason to hate her? And let’s just save other examples some other time for I think I’ve already been making it too obvious that I’m a fan of the British Monarchy and politics. Wala namang taong gumagawa ng mali dahil lang gusto nila o dahil masama sila since birth. Wala namang umiiyak dahil gusto lang nilang umiyak. Wala ring tumatawa ng walang dahilan. Iba na ‘yon ‘pag gano’n. Lahat may pinaghuhugutan, ‘yong iba malalim pa sa Marianas Trench ang pinagmulan. And as for the people whose woes are so great it could shame the Marianas, nobody could rescue you from those depths but yourself. People could try, but if even you couldn’t help yourself up, there’s no use trying. Once upon a time when the moon was blue and the sky without a star but one. Then life is a destiny and a finger with a thread leading somewhere. Hidden in the clouds are some things and rabbit holes go deeper, yonder. Fishes fly. Chickens dive. Peter Pan waits thus close your eyes Then you were gone. People thought you were lost. when you simply found your way here. As for this poem... Wala lang gusto ko lang tumula. Pa-deep lang like the Marianas. |
