Bulacan State University (BulSU) now has a bragging right in the country’s sports arena after the Gold Gears brought home 20 medals in the 3rd Philippine National Games (PNG), May 24-June 2.
Bagging 10 silvers and 10 bronzes, the 77 Gold Gear delegates pitted against teams from private academic institutions, State Colleges and Universities (SUCs), and the Philippine National Team.
Lady runner Aileen Pengson turned her sprints into leaps as she powered a catapulting 1.40-meter jump in the High Jump Seniors category, placing second behind FEU’s Joean Bermudo who landed at 1.59 meters.
Meanwhile, in the 4x400m relay, Pengson, Eli Rose Maguidato, Jennyfer Capuli, and Ma. Criselda Gradaza also snatched silver medals in the Women’s Division Senior Category. Also, the trio of Pengson, Maguidato, and Capuli together with Edlia Dela Cruz ran for a bronze win with their 56.97 seconds finish in the 4x100m relay.
In Sepak Takraw, Jake Jefferson Doria, Leonal Ariola, Reymond Blanco, Almer Francisco, and Melvin Rodil kicked glory against 16 other contenders, seizing them a bronze finish. Moreover, a silver finish was added to these kickers’ list in the Best Regu category.
“Masaya s’yempre, na sa buong Pilipinas isa tayo sa mga best team sa Sepak. Kahit silver lang, [best regu] National Games pa rin naman ‘yon. Ngayon nga ang Bulacan o BulSU pagdating sa bracketing, isa tayo sa mga iniiwasan,” boasted Sepak Coach Raul Bernales.
Rallying other opponents brought a bronze victory to Joyme Fernando and Therese Mendiola in the Badminton Doubles event at the Junior Girls Division, ranking them behind teams FEU and Babolat Academy, which placed second and first, respectively.
On the other hand, in Athletics Men’s Division, Senior Category, sprinters Aldrin Avendaño, Michael Francia, Jihan de Macuta, and Francisco Quijano landed to a silver victory in the 4x400m relay. Clocking 46.51 seconds in the 4x100m relay, Avendaño, Francia, and de Macuta with Eddie Boy Legardo added four bronzes in the gold gear slate.
However, everything is not a story of snatching and bagging honors as Beach Volley netters and Gold Gears’ male spikers failed to spike glory into their side of the court.
"Tanggap naman namin 'yong aming pagkatalo, 'yong karamihan kasi sa team ay baguhan at kulang sa experience; 'di nila nakaya 'yong pressure kaya tuloy nag-resulta kami sa maraming error na hindi naman namin expected," said open spiker Eloie Buenaventura.
Despite some failing to bring home some bacon and not dominating the national games, Bulacan State University Sports Director Raquel Mendoza still commends the Gold Gear’s performance this year by placing well.
“Compared to last year, mas nag-improve sila in their respective events na nagpapakita na ayaw nilang mapahiya at matalo,” commented Mendoza.
Organized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine National Games is held annually as the official qualifying meet for future international sporting events, particularly the Southeast Asian Games.
