After Laboratory High School’s (LHS) John Matthew Bernardo’s feat in badminton at the 2013 Palarong Pambansa held in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental last April 24-27, the LHS shuttler joined the country’s delegation for the 5th ASEAN School Games (ASG) in Hanoi, Vietnam, June 24.
Bernardo got a bronze finish in the individual singles category against National Capital Region’s (NCR) Ros Leenard Pedrosa who finished the tourney as 1st placer; the latter came back strong in the 2nd and 3rd set which left Bernardo behind a completed set of 21-17, 17-21, 13-21 through round robin elimination and point system for the final ranking.
“College na siya [Pedrosa], matagal na siyang naglalaro. Pero lamang ko ‘yong bilis. Maliit kasi ako kaya mabilis kumilos,” said Bernardo after succeeding to snatch a bronze amongst 32 contenders from 16 regions all over the country.
The badminton delegation of Region III-Central Luzon, which includes Bernardo, snatched the 3rd spot in the over-all rankings of the event, outdid by 2nd placer Region VII-Central Visayas with 10 points and 1st placer NCR with 15 points.
Meanwhile, in the overall ranking, NCR soared as champions while Western Visayas and Central Visayas settled on the 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.
Bernardo’s momentum continued until June as he joined the selected set of 2013 Palarong Pambansa medalists to represent the Philippines in the 5th ASG
He competed in the men’s doubles event with Rafael Nicolas Dionisio, Jr., Palaro doubles 3rd placer from Marcelo H. del Pilar National High School.
However, the Bernardo-Dionisio duo lost on their 1st round bid as they were upset in two sets, 15-21 and 13-21 by Malaysia’s Chua Khek-Wei and Mohammad Amzzar who ended up as champions of the boys’ doubles category out of 16 tandems.
“Matangkad at mas matanda sila [Chua and Amzzar]. Malungkot [ang pagkatalo] pero babawian ko sila sa susunod,” said the third year Lab High stude, stating the edge of their opponents.
Despite the loss, LHS Badminton Coach Erwin Capardo expressed how proud he is on how far LHS’s badminton players have already come.
“Mayro’n kasi na kapag nalamangan na [score], kahit na minimal lang ‘yong lamang, bumibigay na. Sila hindi. Maganda ‘yong lumalaban ka hanggang sa dulo, hindi dahil lamang ka. Lumaban ka dahil alam mong mayro’n kang ihahabol,” stated Capardo.
Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, next year’s host country, participated in this year’s ASG.
