Coming off one-win away from a golden campaign, Bulacan State University (BulSU) Sepak Takraw Team fought its way to a double-medal performance in the Philippine National Open (PNO) 2012 held at the Philippines Sports Commission-ULTRA, Pasig City last October 25 to 28.
BulSU Team C kicked out early as they stabbed the first set against Rizal Technological University-Mandaluyong, 15-9. Then, RTU vets pulled out their secret weapon with Philippine Team member Oliver Tumang.
Tumang dropped the bomb for RTU as they unrelentingly assaulted the prides of Bulacan, 3-15 second set victor. The third period saw a recharged Gold Gears as Jeffrey Lauderes, Deo Mark Anthony Dalida, Gio Enriquez, Erol Ostan and Ian Wilfred Mayhay tried to salvage the gold for BulSU.
In the end, the seasoned kickers of Mandaluyong gained the upper hand via 12-15 murder of Region 3’s finest.
“Nahirapan talaga kami kasi alam namin na malakas talaga sila, sa experience lang lamang na lamang sila sa’min. Saka masasabi ko talaga na malakas si Tumang, pero malakas din naman kami,” admitted Lauderas.
BulSU Team C’s road to the Finals saw them sweeping sister team Gold Gear Team B and attack savvy newbies from Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology.
On the other hand, Sepak Team B mopped its last 3 opponents effortlessly for only two sets each crushing Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 15-7 and 13-7; Taytay, Rizal’s team, 15-8 and 15-10 and St. Luciana National High School to the tune of 15-7 and 15-12.
Unfortunately, Leonel Ariola, Melvin Rodil, Joseph Rico Rugay, Jake Jefferson Dorya and Cian Cristopher Diaz saw their luck dip as they dropped their last two assignments falling down to a 3rd place wind-up.
“Kahit na gano’n, effective lahat ng paghihirap ng team namin at hindi nasayang dahil nakakuha kami ng place,” said bronze medalist Ariola.
Despite the lack of gold, Sepak Coach Raul Bernaldes cannot deny how proud he was for his team that can now compete not only on the regional level but also in the nationals.
“S’yempre bilang coach, masaya ako sa mga narating na competition ng mga player ko. Nasabi ko sa sarili ko na ‘di na pang-regionals ang kalidad ng mga player ko kundi nationals na,” affirmed Bernaldes.
Three squads from BulSU completed the 15-team ramble. Winners received a trophy and certificates of recognition.
