Bid farewell to Gold Gears Futsal, Billiards and Softball men’s division players as the Board of Management of the Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletics Association (SCUAA) decided that the said events will be eliminated in the Olympic meet this coming December.
Dean Racquel Mendoza of the College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (COPERS) explained in an interview with Pacesetter that the decision was made based on the requirement of the National SCUAA which does not include the aforementioned events.
“Hindi naman namin actually tinanggal, kung hindi sinunod namin ‘yong requirement sa national, kasi whatever event is going to be competed in the national dapat nandoon sa regional,” she said.
Events such as Karatedo and Beach Volleyball, both men and women, and boxing were excluded from BulSU’s sporting list come the Nationals, as these events were not participated by the university in the regional meet.
“Unfortunate na for the past two years na may event na hindi tayo makasali. Requirement kasi na bago ka makarating ng national, may regional competition. Kaya mag-pe-prepare for the regional ngayon, kasama na ‘yong lima (boxing, beach volleyball and karatedo men and women),” added Mendoza.
However, COPERS Dean Mendoza were quick to point out that such athletes who competed in last year’s SCUAA meet will still be receiving scholarships until the end of the school year.
“Dire-deretso pa din naman ang scholarship nila for this school year, hindi naman natin sila papabayaan basta basta.”
Meanwhile, the said athletes expressed dismay for the sudden elimination of their sports.
“Malungkot na ganon ‘yong nangyari. Nakakadismaya pero ganon talaga eh,” said Softball Captain Jay Legaspi.
