Campaigning against the worsening flood, the Filipino Department of the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) conducted its first ever flash fiction writing contest entitled ‘Flashflood: Mga Flash Fiction Ukol sa Karanasang Baha’.
Getting cue from the Philippines’ consistent flood problems, participants of the said contest were asked to write either personal or imaginary flash fictions related to people’s experiences about the phenomenon that will open the eyes of the readers and help them to come up with a plan to end the said problem.
“Ang gustong ma-achieve ng proyekto na ‘to ay ‘yong mabuksan sa kamalayan ang mga estudyante ng Bulacan State University na ang mga paksa na p’wede nilang sulatin sa anumang anyo ng panitikan ay nasa harap lang nila, katulad ng baha,” said Edilberto Larin Jr., Head of the Filipino Department.
Joselito de Guzman from the CAL snatched the grand prize with his entry “BAHA-la na nga!” which depicts the story of an ordinary student who, while on his way home, encounters misfortunes because of the flood. Also, Mark Vincent Kam from CAL notched the 2nd spot for his “Evacuation Center” while Israel Saguinsin of the College of Education (CoEd) landed 3rd for his entry “Click”.
“Lahat naman po ng mga estudyanteng tulad ko may karanasang pambaha at sa kanilang pagbabahagi nito ay makaka-relate ang lahat at magkakaroon ng impormasyon patungkol dito. Kung iisipin po natin, ‘yong paraan po ng pagsusulat madalas for information purposes. Then dahil nga po sa ideya nila [Filipino Department], naging for awareness na rin,” said De Guzman.
Meanwhile, a special citation was given to College of Engineering’s Arvin Joseph Maclang, CoEds’ Jasmine Joy Reyes and Renelyn Cruz for their works in the awarding ceremony held last September 14. The winners along with the special mentioned participants received certificates and cash prize worth Php500 to Php200. In addition, an audio-sine which contains photos from the Multimedia Division’s PhoTalk and recordings of flash fictions performed by selected students with soundtracks written and composed Lirisista at Artistang Bulakenyong Indie was given to them.
Larin, Maricristh Magaling and Jaime Villafuerte, faculties from CAL, served as judges of the said competition. Flash Fiction is a style of literature written in extreme brevity in which the elements of a narrative story is presented in the least number of words as possible.
