Bulacan State University (BulSU) Eco Rangers launched, ‘Ilihan: Ang Pagbabalik ng Bakawan sa Bayan’ on its first activity entitled Sugod 2014 to preserve the environment at Sagrada Familia, Hagonoy, June 12.
Despite bad weather condition, 25 volunteers participated and planted 500 propagules of mangroves in the shore of Barangay Sagrada Familia which were consisted of 10 Eco Rangers and 15 volunteers from Hagonoy.
“’Yong propagules [kapag lumaki] ito ‘yong nagsisilbing tahanan ng mga isda, hipon... dahil do’n kumikita ang mga mangingisda, nagiging livelihood s’ya. Nakapagtanim kami ng mga bakawan and at the same time nag-enjoy sila. May Part two pa,” said BulSU Eco Rangers president Krizza Andrea Garcia.
From April 25-26, Eco Rangers had a two-day seminar in BulSU Hagonoy campus in preparation for the project in cooperation with Hyleap, the town's non-governmental organization of leaders, about the importance of mangroves in the environment and how it can help the community.
“Bukod sa pagtatanim ng mangrove mas challenging pa dahil malakas ang hangin, ulan at alon. Pero sa kabuuan, naging masaya ang experience na ito. Natutunan ko ang pakikipagtulungan sa ibang tao. At para sa akin, masasabi kong naging matagumpay ang project sa kabila ng ilang problema [sa panahon],” said Carmina Galos, Psychology 4A.
Furthermore, students from Hagonoy believe that this activity of the Eco Rangers can help them and their community in time.
“Makatutulong din soon but not now. Siguro after couple of years ‘pag tumubo na ‘yong mga malalaking ugat na mag-a-absorb ng tubig. ‘Tsaka regarding sa livelihood, hihintayin munang lumaki ‘yong itinanim nila,” held Sarvia Lopez, Civil Engineering 4C from Barangay San Agustin.
The fund used was generated from the 50,000 Php won by Eco Rangers in Colgate Fresh U Competition in 2012 and from the members’ own contributions.
Sugod 2014 is the last project of Garcia and its continuation is yet to be announced by Eco Rangers’ new president, Argee Gonzales, Psychology 2C, who assumed the position on the day of the event.
