Students from Bulacan State University (BulSU) revisited one of the darkest eras in Philippine history by commemorating the 40th anniversary of Martial law, September 19-21.
In line with the theme ‘Martial Law @ 40: Ganito Noon.. Paano na Ngayon?’, the three-day event was spearheaded by the Partido ng Pagkakaisa ng mga Demokratikong Mag-aaral (PDM)and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) through various activities held within the main campus.
The said event focused on informing and reminding the participants of the human rights abuses and the country-wide kleptocracy instituted by the late Marcos strongman.
“Isinulong natin ang gawaing ‘yan, hindi dahil sa ipinagdiriwang natin ang Martial Law, ibinabalik lang natin sa alaala, lalo sa mga katulad ninyo [kabataan], na hindi pa naman naipapanganak noong panahon ng Martial Law, upang makita natin ang mga aral na mapupulot natin doon, para hindi na maulit ang mga pangyayari noon,” said CSSP Dean Reynaldo Naguit.
Launched through a parade upholding the theme ‘Lakad Gunita: Never Again to Martial Law’, participants showed support by wearing black t-shirts. The said parade was concluded by releasing 40 red balloons signifying the number of years that passed since the proclamation of martial rule.
“Para sa akin, hindi naman negative ‘yong commemoration na ‘to at bilang estudyante, mahalaga talaga na malaman ang Martial law bilang bahagi ng history natin, ‘yong kalupitan ng gobyerno ni Marcos during that time” said Marydina Balabis, Management major, participant of the event.
Aside from the parade, a film showing was also conducted presenting Martial Law themed movies such as Dekada ’70, Ora Pro Nobis and Dukot while an open forum entitled ‘Kapihan at Isyu’ was conducted at the BulSU Canteen where students, instructors and the organizers exchanged thoughts about the present issues in the country.
