Scholars raised eyebrows as the Office of the Students Scholarship (OSS) collected a Php25 membership fee as part of the scholars’ renewal process during the enrollment process this academic year.
“Nakakagulat, kasi bakit biglang may sinisingil silang membership fee na Php25, ‘di ko talaga in-expect [kasi] dati naman walang gano’n,” exclaimed Alexis Sebastian, a scholar.
According to OSS Director Dorothy Reyes, they were compelled to ask for Bulacan State University (BulSU) Administration’s approval to authorize the collection of membership fee among scholars due to the absence of the fee last year. Since the membership fee acts as the primary source of the organization’s fund, it became difficult for them to provide for their needs like office supplies.
“Regarding the Php25 membership fee, na dati ay naging optional, nakaapekto ito ng malaki sa organization dahil halos lahat ng member ay ayaw magbayad,” explained Reyes.
Director Reyes then also told Pacesetter in an interview that the collected fee would be used as fund for BulSU Scholars Society (BSS) with the goal to produce at least two projects, which is a requirement to be recognized as a legitimate organization in the university.
“Let’s face it, any organization would not stand alone, if there is no support,” the director added.
Still, some students took it the other way. Sebastian furthered, “Sa palagay ko, hindi naman kailangan ‘yon, kasi sana dati pa nila ‘yon ipinatupad kung kailangan talaga, biglaan kasi.”
In contrast, a scholar who refused to give identification from the College of Art and Letters said in contrary, “Ano ba naman ‘yong Php25 sa Php2, 000 scholarship na makukuha mo di ba?”
The Student Government said that they are willing to help students regarding this issue if proper complaints will be filed onto their office. Yet, the students remained silent toward the issue and refused to file their complaints against the said office.
Furthermore, the administration certified the legality of the fee as it took a month before President Mariano de Jesus signed the request.
“Iyong Php25 na ‘yan, in-approve ‘yan at sisiguraduhin naman ng mga [BSS] officers na ‘yong pera, mapupunta sa proyekto,” concluded Reyes.
